Some Memory Tricks

edited March 2021 in OSFI.AA

I'm new to this material. I may have some ideas for memory tricks but I don't want to put out incorrect / incomplete info.
Hoping someone experienced can look this over!

Anyways here's some thoughts - take or leave.

Qualifications for AA - OSFI Expectations.
OSFI just expects the AA to have experience and be professional. Makes sense right? 2 points for each:

  • Experience: Worked in Canada (3 of past 6 including 1 yr of valuation)
  • Experience: CIA's Standards of Practice (also insurance legislation and regulation)
    notice both above involve specifically CANADIAN experience. The C in CIA does stand for Canadian after all.

  • Professional: Maintain designation requirements

  • Professional: no adverse findings with CIA disciplinary tribunal
    Basically, does the CIA consider you to be a Canadian Professional with Canadian Experience?

Objectives of a peer reviewer.
This person is reviewing the AA right? So the acronym should be AAR (Appointed Actuary Reviewer)
A = Assist OSFI [in assessing insurer safety & soundness]
A = Assist AA [independent advice & professional development]
R = Raise/Ramp confidence in AA [with Regulator, Management, Public]
for this last one, I think of RAMPing up confidence (RAMP = Regulator, Management, Public.) Where's the A in RAMP? Drop it, the AA already has it covered (twice)!

Duties Peer Reviewer doesn't perform.
The thing to remember is that there are some things where the Peer Reviewer Doesn't Care.
Just Remember: Peer reviewer Doesn't Care (PrDC)
Pr = Perform Recalculations
D = Data (verification)
C = Controls (verification)
